General Info to Gather

 

  • Gather your information returns - W-2 form if you have a job, SSA-1099 form if you received social security benefits, 1095-A form, w-2Gs for gambling winnings, K-1s, and more
  • Get your receipts together
  • Gather records for charitable contributions
  • Prepare for tax law changes
  • Make a list of personal information such as your social security number, numbers for dependents you claim, addresses for vacation homes, rental properties, dates you moved, etc..
  • Decide if you need a filing extension
  • Find a copy of last years return

Business Filing Info

Documents for Schedule C:

Information on your business income
  • A P&L (profit and loss, or income) statement(if available)
Information to calculate cost of goods sold (If products are kept in inventory)

To calculate cost of goods sold, you will need:
  • Beginning inventory
  • Cost of labor, materials, and supplies
  • Purchases,
  • Ending inventory

Information on your business expenses:
Your Profit and Loss statement should include your business expenses. You will also need to provide more detail on travel expenses.

  • Internet service (if used in your business)
  • Cell phone expense's (if used in your business)
  • Cost of materials (may include many things depending upon the industry you work in, speak to one of our Staff)
  • Business Travel Expenses (Air fare, Hotel, Rental cars)
  • Meals with clients or while traveling for business
  • Business Mileage
  • Cost of Training Materials, Classes or Seminar cost and CE
  • Annual membership dues or fees
  • Postage (Business Use)
  • Printing services
  • Rents and Utilities Paid for Office or Storage space
  • Advertising Expenses (Business Cards, Signage, ETC)

Information on Business Use of your home (if you work from home)
You will need information for Form 8829 to substantiate business use of your home, including:

  • Calculation of the percentage of your home square footage that is set aside for "regular and exclusive" use by your business.
  • Amount for your home mortgage interest, real estate taxes, and homeowner's insurance, or rent paid, and renters insurance.
  • Home expense like utilities (water, electric), and repairs and maintenance. 
  • Information about the value of your home and land for depreciation purposes.

Information on your business assets
  • You will need to provide information about your business asset records, including business vehicles.
